Professional Playwriting I - Anatomy of a Three-Act Play

If your heart begins to race as the house lights fade, if you find yourself ad-libbing dialogue before the actors have a chance to speak their lines, if characters continue to haunt you long after you’ve left the theatre ... this course is for you! Now you can learn the art - and science - of playwriting from someone who has made a career of identifying and cultivating talented new playwrights. American Theatre Co-op director, Christine Buckley, will guide you through the steps of crafting a full-length play, including: selecting a theme, genre, and working title; creating a compelling storyline; conducting historical and social research; choosing an ideal setting; developing memorable characters; formulating a dynamic plot; describing stage sets, costumes, and props; composing poignant dialogue; providing meaningful stage directions; and, finally, formatting your script like a professional. By the end of the course, students will possess the skills and knowledge necessary to write a three-act play that is worthy of production.
